I just went to a high school graduation where the valedictorian spoke about her struggle with anorexia and how confronting it took all the courage she had. She went on to say that courage is about facing the difficulties in life and that many people confuse courage with fearlessness. Of course, I was able to put this in context of mortgages. After all, a real estate purchase is the biggest purchase of a person's life and requires some courage.
- Look at your credit score. Many people lack the courage to confront their debts. Often the credit report has incorrect information that needs to be correctd. If you know what you owe, you will be in a better position to plan to pay it and what you will be able to pay in mortgage payments.
- Have the courage to buy a house that you can afford. The mortgage crisis was in large part due to buyers' unrealistic (and fearless) belief that they could afford MUCH more than they could.
- Have the courage to say no. If the real estate is not what you want, don't buy it.
Courage. Good luck.
